Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the theory of land rent as formulated by Marx in section VI of Das Kapital, book III, in order to evaluate critically the literature on the subject, especially the controversy over the theory of absolute rent and the attempt, made by Marx's critics, to replace it with a generalization of the notion of monopoly rent. After presenting Marx’s theory of rent and the critical appraisal of this literature on the subject, an alternative interpretation on the notion of market value is presented, allowing to overcome the difficulties pointed out by Marx’s critics in his theory of absolute rent. That is followed by a demonstration of the validity of some of its main claims, as well as some of its main implications.
