Abstract

Philanthropy is not what characterises contemporary capitalism and of which Brazil is a privileged point of observation, having experienced the brutal growth of so-called 'civil society organisations' especially after 1990. There are several studies analyzing the advance of capital over public resources (education, health and especially social security) through private apparatuses of hegemony. There is philanthropy in capitalism - this is a privilege of inequality. There is no philanthropic capitalism. The enlargement of the State due to the performance of non-profit entrepreneurials entities is not necessarily positive. Marx and Gramsci offer a solid path for the analysis of the large-scale dissemination of bourgeois procedures aimed at the 'sterilization' of class struggles and the increased exploitation of the labor force. This intervention brings together some elements of synthesis on the meaning of the various generations of non-profit entrepreneurial entities, and presents research challenges that we need to face.
