For a realist understanding of The Ingenious Gentleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha

Abstract
This paper is the output of a study on the theoretical appreciation of Miguel de Cervantes’ most celebrated work, and our purpose is to underpin a realist and Marxist interpretation of this novel. To do this, we firstly examine some main interpretations, pointing out their limits as shown by their own bibliography. After that we present some interpretative grounds developed by Antonio Cândido and György Lukács. Lastly, we defend an interpretative guideline built from Marx’ and late Lukács’ contributions, where we intend not to warp the original meaning of this novel, even though attempting derive important consequences from there to present-day problems.
